JCC Filmfest presents the Charleston premiere of MENASHE

Wednesday, January 3, 2018 @ 7 pm
Terrace Theater
Tickets $12.50

Within Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community, a widower battles for custody of his son. Menashe intimately explores the nature of faith and the price of parenthood.

A discussion led by Sara Sharnoff Chesley, LMFT, Director of Charleston Jewish Family Services, follows the screening.

“The film is worth praising for what it is and admiring for what it’s not — there’s no sappiness or false emotion, and none of the clichéd, quirky misfits who populate so many commercial comedies.” — NY Times
Proceeds from this event benefit Charleston Jewish Family Services, an affiliate of the Charleston Jewish Federation. CJFS, a provider of financial and emotional support in our community, is guided by the fundamental Jewish values of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repair of the world).”

Menashe Ludwig, the lead actor, and inspiration for the movie, has agreed to Skype in after our January 3rd screening. Don’t miss out!
This program is made possible with generous funding from the Charleston Jewish Federation.

The JCC WOW Bookfest presents:
Joan Juliet Buck: The Price of Illusion

When: Thursday, January 18, 2018 | 7:00 PM
Where: Charleston Library Society
164 King Street, Charleston, SC 29401
Cost: $10

From Joan Juliet Buck, former editor-in-chief of Paris Vogue comes her dazzling, compulsively readable memoir: a fabulous and very honest account of four decades spent in the creative heart of London, New York, Los Angeles, and Paris.

Joan’s memoir tells the story of a life lived in the best places at the most interesting times: London and New York in the swinging 1960s, Rome and Milan in the dangerous 1970s, Paris in the heady 1980s and 1990s. But when her fantasy life at Vogue came to an end, she had to find out who she was after all those years of make-believe. She chronicles this journey in beautiful and at times heartbreaking prose, taking the reader through the wild parties and the fashion, the celebrities and creative geniuses as well as love, loss, and the loneliness of getting everything you thought you wanted and finding it’s not what you’d imagined. While Joan’s story is unique, her journey toward self-discovery is refreshing and universal.

Stephen Tobolowsky: My Adventures With God @ The Schoolhouse
Feb 8 @ 7:00 pm

From legendary character actor Stephen Tobolowsky—who currently appears on The Goldbergs, HBO’s Silicon Valley, and Norman Lear’s new One Day at a Time, author of The Dangerous Animals Club and The Tobolowsky Files podcast—My Adventures with God is a funny, introspective collection about love, catastrophe, and triumph, all told through the lens of his evolving relationship with the mystery that is “God.”

As Tobolowsky explains, “It’s hard to believe in nothing. Even cats believe in suppertime. As much as we love certainty, we are often shaped by the invisible, the unexplainable—something we call faith. We are inclined to acknowledge the holy. Even if it is only a paper heart we find in an old suitcase.”

When: Saturday, February 10, 2018 | 7:00 PM

Where: The Schoolhouse
720 Magnolia Road Charleston, SC 29407
